Task 3.2 Technical Assistance: Technical assistance was provided by Custom Adhesive Technology, Inc. (CAT). CAT developed three distinct products and manufactured pilot size adhesive compounds, finished tapes and membranes of these products. The different versions were needed to test the suitability of different general approaches. Since the intended applications are subject to stringent code requirements, all five versions were submitted for selected external testing after undergoing extensive internal testing. Initial results from external testing (pending successful conclusion of those tests) indicate that three versions will be, with minor adjustments, suitable for presentation as potential new products. In two versions, an adjustment in the plasticizer choice is needed to overcome the absorbency effects of the utilized rubber. In previous experiences with selected rubber choices from narrowly defined sources, the used inexpensive plasticizers did work. But due to their much higher cost and limited availability, it becomes clear now that a different approach to plasticization, as shown with the other three versions, is the way to present a more economically viable product. CAT will make pilot size production runs and present the products, along with the test results, to major building product companies to move them to incorporate recycled tire rubber containing products into their program . Task 3.2 Material Testing : Testing services were performed by IAPMO R&T Lab and Intertek (York, PA). IAPMO R&T Lab performed 24 material tests for the five variations of products. Intertek (York, PA) performed puncture resistance tests for two thicknesses of the waterproof membrane.
Task 3.2 Budget: See Table 4.
