A $57,165 Tire-Derived Products grant from CalRecycle enabled the Glen Paul School to purchase recycled rubber molded tiles for both playgrounds. Years installed : 2011 and 2012 Savings : Every two years, the school used to replenish the wood chips at a cost of $2,000. Every eight or ten years they used to remove and replace all the wood chips which cost $10,000. Benefits : Recycled rubber tiles are safer for children during falls, improve accessibility for children with wheelchairs or walkers, and provide more frequent access to playgrounds after rains. Manufacturing process : Whole tires are fed into machines that resize the tires into smaller and smaller pieces to create crumb rubber. The crumb rubber is then mixed with binders, poured into molds and cured to make the finished recycled rubber tiles. ASTM standard : The recycled rubber molded playground surfacing tiles meet ASTM F1292 “Standard Specification for Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment,” ASTM F1951 “Standard Specification for Determination of Accessibility of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment” and the new Americans with Disabilities Act standards regarding the accessibility of public playgrounds that went into effect March 15, 2012.
